Android download manager guide: stalled and incomplete files
Check the failure stage first: finding a file, transferring it, saving it, or playing it.
| Symptom | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No download option | Source supports saving; link still works | Use a creator-provided download. A protected stream may be unsupported. |
| Stops at the same point | Available space and source URL expiry | Free space or request a fresh permitted link; avoid repeatedly retrying a denied source. |
| Stops after switching apps | App notification and Android background restrictions | Review the app’s download status and device settings; do not disable protections blindly. |
| File exists but will not play | Completion, file size and codec | Compare expected size; test another known-good file; inspect codec information. |
| Download is slower than expected | Actual throughput rather than advertised Wi-Fi speed | Use the download-time calculator with a measured rate. |
Before a large transfer
Leave room for the final file and any temporary processing. A 2 GB final video may need more than 2 GB free while being assembled. The exact requirement depends on the app’s workflow. Keep a stable connection and check the destination folder.
Resume is conditional
A resumable transfer requires suitable server support and a valid resource. A refreshed URL may identify a different file; blindly appending bytes can corrupt the output. When the app asks you to restart, keep the old file only if you still need it for diagnosis.
