Prepare videos for offline viewing on Android

Choose a legitimate source

Use your recordings, openly licensed media that permits the intended use, or the creator’s authorized download. Keep permission and attribution information alongside files when relevant.

Build a small travel folder

  1. Choose a few files you will actually watch.
  2. Budget space with the storage calculator using free space, not the phone’s advertised capacity.
  3. Finish downloads while you have a stable connection.
  4. Play the beginning, middle and end. Check sound and subtitles.
  5. Switch off the network and repeat the test.
  6. Keep an independent backup of anything irreplaceable.

A worked storage budget

Ten 30-minute videos averaging 4.128 Mbps together need about 9.288 GB before overhead. A 32 GB phone will not necessarily have that much free space: the operating system, apps and other files also use storage.

Offline availability inside a subscription service can have its own expiry and account rules. A downloaded file and an in-app licensed offline copy are different things.
